Oxfam and bKash seal the deal to work together for humanitarian response

An agreement was signed between Oxfam and bKash, a joint venture between BRAC Bank Limited, Bangladesh, and Money in Motion LLC, USA, in the capital on 10 February, 2013 aiming to transfer cash to 3371 households in Fulchori Upazila of Gaibandha, as part of Oxfam’s humanitarian response in Gaibandha.

Md. Badi Akhter, Acting Country Director of Oxfam and Kamal S. Quadir, CEO of bkash Limited signed the agreement on behalf of Oxfam and bKash respectively.

Oxfam with the financial support from ECHO, has initiated, Food Security Response Initiatives and Efforts for floods in North Western Districts (FRIEND) Project, to reach 3371 households in 5 Unions of Fulchori Upazilla of Gaibandha. Under this project total of 6,520 BDT will be disbursed to each household through Cash for Work and Cash for Training programs.

Oxfam is implementing FRIEND with its partner Gono Unnayan Kendra (GUK), where mobile technology is used to transfer cash to the female-headed households who are unable to participate in other cash transfer activities.

bKash is dedicated to widening the net of financial inclusion among the people of Bangladesh by facilitating money transfer through mobile phones. bKash provides mobile financial services allowing customers to send, receive, and pay money from their mobile phones.

    it’s not working together, it’s all about business. I know how much commission and service charges would be paid to bKash. but thanks to bKash anyway for their willingness to do ‘business’ with Oxfam. but if anyone tends to paint this with ‘CSR’ color, then please come and talk to me. Oxfam respects the business community with due recognition. but here I don’t think bKash is contributing with something special which could have been of extra benefit to Oxfam beneficiaries.
