March 13th, 2013 by Posted in Uncategorized, Women's leadership

Lighted candles and promises to stop violence against women heralded the International Women’s Day while celebrating it with the WE CAN (Amrai Pari) campaign at the Central Shaheed Minar.

Supported by Oxfam, WE CAN and Dhaka University jointly organized the program with a promise styled ‘Adhar Bhangar Swapath’ (pledge to break the fear of darkness). In line with this year’s theme for the day, as given by the United Nations, ‘A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women,’ other objectives of the event were to create mass awareness on the rights of mobility and to make nights safer for women.

Several hundred women, including female students of Dhaka University, were seen participating in the candle lighting program at the Shaheed Minar, which started with a spellbinding cultural show at 11 PM on 7 March and continued till the zero hour. WE CAN Chairperson Sultana Kamal and Dhaka University Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique were present on the occasion along with Oxfam staff.

Initiated in 2004, with support from Oxfam, WE CAN continues to end violence against women and as of today around 1 million individuals have joined the campaign as Change Makers to bring positive changes in personal discriminatory attitudes and behavior towards women and girls in Bangladesh.

Earlier in the day, staff joined the celebration at the office premises, by wearing purple as the color of Women’s Day. Different activities like releasing balloons, cutting cake and a mock parliamentary debate on women’s right were held to observe the day.
