Oxfam celebrates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

“Indigenous peoples building alliances: Honouring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements,” with this theme, Oxfam along with other rights groups celebrated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples this year with different events. Since 2001, Oxfam has been celebrating this day in style.

Prior to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (9 August) Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum, supported by Oxfam, organized a seminar on 3 August in Dhaka to observe the day. Speakers at the seminar urged the government to implement the CHT peace accord effectively. “The government should effectively implement the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord, 1997 to boost its performance before the upcoming parliamentary elections” said Neal Walker, UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh while addressing the seminar.

Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Heather Cruden, Chakma Circle Chief Raja Devasish Roy, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Mizanur Rahman, Parliamentary Caucus on Indigenous Peoples Convener and Workers’ Party of Bangladesh President Rashed Khan Menon,

Chairman of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity, Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma aka Santu Larma, Charge d’affaires of the Danish embassy, Lene Volkerson, Charge d’affaires of the European Union delegation in Bangladesh, Andrew Barnard and Country director Oxfam, Snehal Soneji also reiterated the demand of implementing the CHT peace accord.

On 4 August, Parliamentary Caucus on Indigenous People organized a discussion marking the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, to be observed on August 9, with assistance of International Labour Organization and Oxfam.

Speakers at the discussion again stressed the need of proper implementation of the CHT peace accord.

Industries Minister Dilip Barua, the caucus Convener Rashed Khan Menon and State Minister for Social Welfare Promod Mankin, Chairman of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity, Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma aka Santu Larma were spoke among others in the discussion.

Seminars were also organized outside Dhaka in Tangail, Moulavibazar and Rangpur on the eve of Int’l IP day.

Exhibition of products made by Indigenous people was held at Madhupur, Tangail and colorful cultural activities also took part to mark the day.
