Hi Duncan,

Really interesting stuff - always though social security began after the war, fascinating to realise there was such a precedent.

I wander if there's anything to learn from current state of UK welfare system? A few quick thoughts...

- social security has to be accompanied by decent labour laws - http://www.touchstoneblog.org.uk/2009/02/tacking-poverty-means-tackling-casual-jobs/

- otherwise it can act as a trap. It's got to provide enough, be flexible and responsive - http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/ukpp/2009/02/could_you_live_on_60_per_week.html

- rather than coercive and demeaning - http://www.oxfam.org.uk/applications/blogs/ukpp/2008/12/welfare_reform_the_wrong_appro.html

I'm sure there's more...
